Short distances only. A rich condition from a stuck sensor can damage the catalytic converter over time. If you also smell sulfur from the exhaust, the converter may already be stressed.

What it means

P0132 means the upstream O2 sensor on bank 1 is stuck above 0.45 volts, indicating the sensor sees a rich exhaust mixture or is not switching properly. A sensor stuck high causes the ECM to reduce fuel delivery. If the sensor is simply stuck but the exhaust is not actually rich, the ECM's correction will lean out the engine, causing a stumble. As with P0131, separating a stuck sensor from a genuinely rich engine requires looking at fuel trims.

  1. Failed O2 sensor stuck at high voltageThe sensing element has degraded and the output stays high instead of switching between lean and rich.
  2. Genuine rich exhaust conditionExcess fuel from a leaking injector, high fuel pressure, or a bad coolant temp sensor causes actual rich exhaust.

Check long-term fuel trims. Negative LTFT above minus 10 percent means the ECM is actively pulling fuel, confirming a rich signal. If fuel trims are near zero, the sensor is stuck rather than reading a real rich condition. Before replacing the sensor, check for oil or coolant in the exhaust (white or blue smoke), since a contaminated sensor will destroy its replacement in the same way.

Yes. A persistently rich mixture sends excess unburned fuel into the converter, overheating it. If you have had P0132 for weeks, ask the shop to check converter efficiency while they replace the sensor.

Negative fuel trim means the ECM is removing fuel from the base delivery map to compensate for a rich signal. A long-term fuel trim of minus 15 percent means the engine is running 15 percent richer than the base calibration.
