P0172: Your engine is burning too much fuel on the driver side
System Too Rich (Bank 1)
Yes, you can drive for now, but fix it soon. Running rich wastes fuel and can foul spark plugs and damage the catalytic converter over time. If you smell raw fuel from the exhaust, prioritize it.
What it means
Your engine is using more fuel than it should for the amount of air coming in. The computer has been trimming fuel back as far as it can go, but the mixture is still too rich on Bank 1. The oxygen sensor confirms it is seeing low oxygen in the exhaust. Running rich is not just a fuel economy problem. Over time, excess fuel washes cylinder walls, dilutes oil, fouls plugs, and coats and destroys the catalytic converter. The computer cannot fully compensate if the root cause is large enough.
Common causes
- Leaking or stuck-open fuel injectorA constantly dribbling injector floods the cylinder. This is a top cause of persistent rich codes.
- Faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensorA MAF reading low tells the computer less air is coming in, so it commands more fuel than needed.
- Clogged or restricted air filter or air intakeReduced air into the engine shifts the mixture rich. One of the cheapest things to check.
- Coolant temperature sensor reading coldA cold reading tells the ECM the engine is still warming up, so it keeps the mixture richer than it should be.
- Faulty fuel pressure regulator or stuck-open check valveExcessive fuel pressure delivers more fuel per injection event than the computer expects.
What it costs
- Air filter replacement$20 to $50
- MAF sensor cleaning or replacement$50 to $300
- Fuel injector cleaning or replacement$150 to $600 depending on cylinder count
- Coolant temperature sensor$80 to $200 installed
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, steady
- Noticeable drop in fuel economy
- Strong fuel smell from the exhaust
- Black or sooty exhaust smoke
- Fouled spark plugs on affected cylinders
What to do next
Start cheap: check the air filter. If it is clean, unplug the MAF sensor and see if the code changes behavior. A contaminated MAF is common and can sometimes be fixed with MAF cleaner spray. If that does not help, check fuel trims at idle and at cruise. A big swing between idle and cruise points to a vacuum or MAF issue. Stable rich trims at all RPMs point to an injector or fuel pressure problem.

FAQ
- Can a bad O2 sensor cause P0172?
- Yes, if the upstream sensor is stuck reporting a lean signal, the computer adds fuel trying to correct it. Check fuel trim data to see if the computer is actually adding or cutting fuel.
- P0172 and P0175 together -- what does that mean?
- Both banks running rich means the cause is shared between banks. Look at the MAF sensor, fuel pressure, or a contaminated air intake rather than bank-specific components.
- Will running rich ruin my catalytic converter?
- It will accelerate wear. Excess fuel burns in the converter, raising its temperature well above normal operating range. Extended rich running can destroy it.
