P0171: your engine is getting too much air and not enough fuel

Short drives are okay if the engine runs smoothly. But a lean mixture burns hot, so do not ignore it. Get it looked at within a few days. Stop driving now if it runs rough, stalls, or the light flashes.

What it means

Your engine wants a set mix of air and fuel. On Bank 1, the side with cylinder #1, the computer sees too much air and not enough fuel. It has been adding fuel past its normal limit to fix this, and it cannot keep up. The code tells you the mix is lean. It does not tell you why. The cause is almost always extra air sneaking in past a vacuum leak, an airflow sensor under-reporting, or weak fuel delivery. Here is the trap: people replace the oxygen sensor because it "reported" the problem. That sensor is the messenger, not the cause, and it is the most over-replaced part on this code.

Common causes

  1. Vacuum leak letting in unmetered airThe #1 real-world cause. Cracked intake boot, intake manifold gasket, split vacuum or PCV hose, or brake booster hose.
  2. Dirty or contaminated MAF sensorThe airflow sensor under-reports, so the computer adds too little fuel. The most overlooked cheap fix. An $8 can of cleaner clears many cases.
  3. Stuck-open or failed PCV valveThis is an internal vacuum leak. It can fool a standard intake smoke test, so check it even if the smoke test looks clean.
  4. Weak fuel deliveryFailing fuel pump, clogged filter, bad pressure regulator, or dirty injectors. Suspect this when trims are lean at all speeds and the MAF checks out.
  5. Exhaust leak before the front O2 sensorA cracked manifold or leaking gasket pulls in outside air and fools the sensor. Listen for ticking on a cold start.
  6. Failing upstream oxygen sensorPossible but uncommon, and the single most over-replaced part here. It usually passes testing before this code sets.

Do the cheap stuff first. Clean the MAF sensor with an $8 can of cleaner. Squeeze and inspect the intake boot between the airbox and throttle body, flexing the ribs so hidden cracks open up. Check the vacuum and PCV hoses. Then let the fuel trims point you. If long-term fuel trim is high at idle but drops toward normal near 2500 RPM, it is a vacuum leak, so smoke-test the intake. If trims are high at idle and at 2500 RPM, suspect the MAF or fuel delivery, so pressure-test the fuel. Do not throw an oxygen sensor at it. Remember the PCV valve trap: a stuck-open one is an internal leak a smoke test can miss.
