P0141: The downstream oxygen sensor heater on the driver side is not working

O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)

Low severityCan you keep driving?

Yes, you can keep driving. The downstream sensor heater failure has almost no effect on drivability. It does affect emissions monitoring accuracy, so fix it before your next inspection.

What it means

Like the upstream sensor, the downstream oxygen sensor has a heater element to bring it to operating temperature quickly. P0141 means the PCM detected an abnormal current draw in that heater circuit. Unlike the upstream heater fault, this one has little effect on how the engine runs because the downstream sensor does not drive fuel trim adjustments. The computer uses it mainly to evaluate converter efficiency. The practical risk is that without reliable downstream data, a failing catalytic converter may go unnoticed longer.

Common causes

  1. Failed heater element inside the downstream O2 sensorThe heater wire burns out with heat cycling. Most common cause by far.
  2. Blown fuse for the O2 heater circuitAlways check the fuse first. One fuse can power multiple sensor heaters.
  3. Open or shorted wiring to the sensor heater pinsHeat and vibration crack insulation near the sensor bung over time.

What to do next

Start with the fuse. If it is good, inspect the connector at the sensor for heat damage and corrosion. The downstream sensor is usually more accessible than the upstream one. If wiring looks fine, replace the sensor. While you are there, inspect the upstream sensor too if mileage is high, since heater elements age at similar rates.

Lewis tracks the heater circuit status for both sensor positions so you can see whether one sensor failure is isolated or part of a broader circuit problem. Download Lewis.

FAQ

Is P0141 a serious code?
It is the least urgent of the O2 sensor codes. Drivability is unaffected. It matters because it blinds the computer to converter health and fails an emissions test.
Can I fix P0141 by just clearing the code?
No. The heater circuit fault will return immediately at the next drive cycle until the underlying cause is fixed.
If P0135 and P0141 are both set, do I need two sensors?
Possibly, but check the shared fuse and wiring first. A single fuse often feeds heater power to both sensors.
