What it means

Variable valve timing advances or retards the intake cam to optimize power and fuel economy at different RPMs. This code means the intake cam on bank 1 is more retarded than the computer commanded, or it moved to retard and got stuck there. The most common reason is a sticky VVT solenoid or oil that is too dirty to flow freely through the actuator. It is different from P0010, which is a wiring problem. P0012 means the actuator can move, but it moved the wrong way or too far.
